It's been an exciting year for KOMPAKT, filled to the brim with events, sounds and experiences that made the label's 20th anniversary celebrations a truly satisfying endeavor. It seems quite fitting, then, to cap off 2013 with the surprising return of a veritable legend: after laying dormant for years, WOLFGANG VOIGT's notorious GAS project is being resurrected to remix the title track of THE FIELD's much-acclaimed album CUPID'S HEAD (KOMPAKT 290). That alone is a mouth-watering proposition for all fans of advanced electronics, but as always with GAS, there's a bit more story to the sound than meets the ear.

Throughout his career, THE FIELD's Axel Willner made no secret of his infatuation with the first GAS full-length from 1995 that was released on the legendary-but-defunct Mille Plateaux imprint. It's a spiritual kinship that also informed the cover artwork of THE GAS REMIXES where we see WOLFGANG VOIGT employing a scan of the vintage loden jacket he wore during the recording of the third GAS album KÖNIGSFORST in 1997. It's this winning combination of austere simplicity, lush textures and witty referencing that makes GAS one of the most iconic offerings from the Kompakt multiverse and an important source code for a whole generation of artists exploring the marches between hard-hitting techno and experimental ambient.

Now remixing the stellar "Cupid's Head" from THE FIELD's eponymous album as GAS, WOLFGANG VOIGT closes the circle and reintroduces us to the gorgeous wall of sound the classic project has become known for. GAS always appeared more like a force of nature than a sample-based compositional method, with the new cuts being no different: the two reworks embrace the original track with an exceptional rigor of argument and make it their own... which once again is exactly the kind of referential irony that we've come to love about the Voigtian output. Both an aggregate state and a unique aesthetic, the sound of GAS has returned and we are truly stoked to have it back.
