Serious Times - Serious Music. In the middle of the 1990s, Wolfgang Voigt, better known under a great many pseudonyms such as MIKE INK, STUDIO1 or GRUNGERMAN, and the driving force behind the rise of Cologne Minimal Techno, had reached a temporary peak in his career. Regardless, he never really stopped pursuing and developing his true creative music passion. Going back to the 1980s, Voigt began working under a self realized concept he named BLEI. Taking in the most varied sound models, he began to extract elements from classical, polka, or brass music, and along with electronic pop music and German Schlager sounds form a distinguished and unique pop music style that would fit in with the subculture at that time. In the early 1990s, influenced by Techno, VOIGT began to experiment with a timbal marching through strongly alienated, free-floating string loops. These elegiac tracks, their lack of beginning nor end beginninglessness and endlessness, their intoxicating, smooth and partly amorphous structure sounded to him like evaporating gas and thus, GAS music was born. GAS is the vision of a sonic body between Schönberg and Kraftwerk, between French horn and bass drum. GAS is Wagner goes glam rock, and Hansel and Gretel on acid. GAS is there to take you on a seemingly endless march through the under woods - and into the discoteque - of an imaginary, nebulous forest.

In his music, Wolfgang Voigt does not create a direct reference to the original sounds and or even the forest itself. He rather tries to reduce the "material" to its basic aesthetic structure by using different zoom, loop and alienation techniques in order to release it from its original meaning and context. His intention is to create a kind of aesthetic essence, a cave (detail/loop/repetition) where you can get lost. And for all of you who think that this is too heavy to ingest, please just accept it as wonderful music.

For the first time ever, this book “WOLFGANG VOIGT - GAS” also presents the visual aspect of the comprehensive GAS project. It is not meant to be a "monolithic" retrospective of his visual work, but it features a broad spectrum of photographic images taken between 1995 and 1998 showing many different moods and perspectives of Wolfgang Voigt's cosmos. What they all have in common, however, is the mystical focus and seemingly, the blurring of boundaries between lightness and darkness, happiness and depression, kitsch and art, pixels and leaves. And the enclosed music CD, VOIGT has opened his treasure chest and presents some well-selected, rare jewels from the very early days (and nights). 4 of the 5 tracks have never been released or played before.

The 4 CD box GAS - NAH UND FERN - comes along in a special and stylish collector's format, including 4 small artwork prints. The double vinyl comes in a fold cover with a bonus artwork print and is strictly limited. Both formats include the re-mastered 4 albums: GAS (1996), ZAUBERBERG (1997), KÖNIGSFORST (1998) and POP (2000), all released on Mille Plateaux at that time. The connoisseur will notice one or two new tracks and versions. At the beginning of the re-release project, Wolfang Voigt thought about re-mastering all of the 4 GAS albums and make them more contemporary. JÖRG BURGER and WOLFGANG VOIGT started their adventurous mastering trip through the world of today's magic tools and plug-ins. Yet with growing amazement, BURGER/VOIGT diagnosed GAS' persistent, almost stubborn resistance against any "refreshing" attempts. For authenticity reasons, they then decided to preserve most of the original GAS sounds and versions. Well, sometimes, the original sound is just the only truth. Even if it hurts.
Cd1 Gas / Cd2 Zauberberg/ Cd3 Königsforst / Cd4 Pop Ernste Zeiten, Ernste Musik.

Mitte Der 90er Jahre Hatte Wolfgang Voigt Durch Das Stetige Vorantreiben Und Neu Erfinden Des Damals Weltweit Boomenden Minimal Techno-Made-In-Cologne Unter Unterschiedlichsten Pseudonymen (Mike Ink, Studio1, Grungerman...) Einen Vorläufigen Erfolgshöhepunkt Erreicht. Parallel Dazu Hatte Er Nie Damit Aufgehört, An Der Umsetzung Seiner Ursprünglichen Künstlerischen Leidenschaft Zu Arbeiten. Unter Dem Projektnamen Blei Feilte Er Schon Seit Den 80ern An Den Unterschiedlichsten Modellen, Um Aus Musikalischen Bezügen Wie Klassik, Polka Und Blasmusik, Aber Auch Pop-Elektronik Und Schlager, Eine Subkulturtaugliche, Eigenständige Popmusik Zu Destillieren. Anfang Der 90er Lässt Voigt, Unter Dem Einfluss Von Techno, Eine Weit Entfernte Bassdrum (Pauke) Durch Stark Verfremdete, Frei Fließende Streicher-Loops Marschieren. Die Scheinbare Anfangs- Und Endlosigkeit, Die Rauschhaft Weiche, Teilweise Amorphe Struktur Der Elegischen Musikstücke Scheint Wie Gasförmig Auszuströmen. Das Projekt Gas Ist Geboren. Gas Fantasiert Über Einen Klangkörper Zwischen Schönberg Und Kraftwerk, Zwischen Waldhorn Und Bassdrum. Gas Ist Glamrock Als Wagner, Ist Hänsel Und Gretel Auf Acid. Ein Endloser Marsch Durchs Unterholz - In Die Disco - Eines Imaginären, Nebulösen Waldes. Dabei Geht Es Voigt Nie Um Den Musikalischen Originalbezug Oder Gar Um Den Wald Als Solchen. Vielmehr Versucht Er, Das “Material“ Durch Diverse Zoom-, Loop- Und Verfremdungstechniken Auf Seine Ästhetische Grundstruktur Zurückzuführen, Um Es Von Seiner Eigentlichen Bedeutung Zu Befreien. Sozusagen Eine Ästhetische Essenz, Eine Höhle (Detail/Loop/Wiederholung) Zu Schaffen, In Der Man Sich Verlieren Kann. Für Alle, Denen Das Zu Viel Ist, Darf Es Auch Einfach Nur Wunderschöne Musik Sein.

Das Vorliegende Buch - Wolfgang Voigt - Gas - Zeigt Erstmalig In Größerem Umfang Auch Die Bildnerische Seite Des Gas Projektes. Die Auswahl Der Bilder Muss Eher Als Werkschau Denn Als Genuines Gesamtwerk “Aus Einem Guss“ Begriffen Werden. Es Zeigt Ein Breites Spektrum Aus Zwischen 1995 Und 1998 Entstandenen Fotos, Die Unterschiedliche Stimmungen Und Blickwinkel Des Voigt'schen Kosmos Zeigen. Allen Gemein Ist Jedoch Dieser Magische Fokus, Und Die Scheinbare Auflösung Der Grenzen Zwischen Leicht Und Düster, Glück Und Depression, Kitsch Und Kunst, Pixel Und Laub. Für Die Beiliegende Cd Hat Voigt In Die Schatzkiste Gegriffen Und Einige Perlen Der Ganz Frühen Tage (Und Nächte) Ans Licht Geholt. 4 Der 5 Stücke Sind Niemals Zuvor Irgendwo Gespielt Worden.

Die 4cd Box Gas - Nah Und Fern - Kommt Im Schicken Liebhaber- Und Sammlerformat, Inklusive 4 Kleiner Kunstdrucke. Das Doppelvinyl Mit Klappcover Und Bonuskunstdruck Ist Streng Limitiert. Beide Formate Beinhalten Die Überarbeiteten 4 Alben - Gas (1996), Zauberberg (1997), Königsforst (1998) Und Pop (2000), Die Seinerzeit Auf Mille Plateau Erschienen Sind. Der Kenner Wird Ein, Zwei Neue Stücke Und Versionen Heraushören. Am Anfang Des Wiederveröffentlichungsprojektes Stand Die Idee, Die 4 Gas Alben Klanglich Zeitgemäß Zu Überarbeiten. Also Begaben Sich Jörg Burger Und Wolfgang Voigt Auf Eine Abenteuerliche Masteringreise Durch Das Reich Neuzeitlicher Zaubertools Und Plug-Ins. Mit Zunehmender Verblüffung Stellten Burger/Voigt Mehr Und Mehr Fest, Das Sich Ein Grossteil Des Gas Oeuvres Als Völlig Behandlungsresistent Erwies Und Sich Sämtlichen Versuchen Klanglicher “Auffrischung“ Beharrlich Widersetzte. So Beschloss Man, Um Der Echtheit Willen, Den Naturklang Der Originale Größtenteils Beizubehalten. Manchmal Ist Der Originalklang Eben Doch Der Einzig Wahre. Auch Wenn Er Weh Tut.
