The Japanese cherry blossom is probably one of the world's most famous heralds of spring, announcing the new season. It is also one of the most important symbols of Japanese culture. It stands for beauty, departure and transience.

In pandemic times, the onset of the warmer seasons now also stands for unwieldy terms such as the "seasonal effect," which describes that when we humans spend more time outdoors again, malicious viruses are no longer at the top of our immune system's guest list. So thanks to rising temperatures, we're keeping it with George Michael: We're done with the sofa! Let's go outside!

In 1959, Japanese Somei-Yoshino Sakura trees were donated to the city of Toronto in the name of the citizens of Tokyo. A beautiful orchard was planted in High Park, where a free community picnic was held each spring when the trees were in full bloom to celebrate the beauty of the season and the great tradition of ambient music in Japan.

Both in the spring of 2020 and also one year later the event was cancelled due to the pandemic, so our friend Marinko has created this mix for you to share the spirit of the season and celebrate the beauty with a selection of tracks from 20 years of our Pop Ambient history.

Marinko lives and works as a musical consultant, artist & DJ in Canada. He was a part of the Vinyl Interventions Trio, has worked with Richie Hawtin and Plus 8 Records, and enjoys crafting memes in his spare time.

Die japanische Kirschblüte ist wahrscheinlich eines der weltbekanntesten Frühlingsboten, die die neue Jahreszeit ankündigen. Sie ist auch eines der wichtigsten Symbole der japanischen Kultur überhaupt. Sie steht für Schönheit, Aufbruch und Vergänglichkeit.

In pandemischen Zeiten steht der Beginn der wärmeren Jahreszeiten nun auch für sperrige Begriffe wie den “saisonalen Effekt“, der beschreibt, dass, wenn wir Menschen uns wieder mehr draußen aufhalten, bösartige Viren nicht länger ganz oben auf der Gästeliste unseres Immunsystems stehen. Somit halten wir es dank steigender Temperaturen mit George Michael: We’re done with the sofa! Let’s go Outside!

1959 wurden der Stadt Toronto japanische Somei-Yoshino Sakura-Bäume im Namen der Bürger von Tokio geschenkt. Ein wunderschöner Obstgarten wurde im High Park gepflanzt, in dem jeden Frühling, wenn die Bäume in voller Blüte stehen, ein kostenloses Picknick veranstaltet wurde, um die Schönheit der Jahreszeit und die Tradition der japanischen Ambient-Musik zu feiern. Im Frühjahr 2020 und auch ein Jahr später wurde die Veranstaltung aufgrund der Pandemie abgesagt. Deshalb hat unser Freund Marinko diesen Mix für Euch erstellt, um den Geist dieser Jahreszeit zu teilen und ihre Schönheit mit einer Auswahl von Tracks aus unserer Pop Ambient-Reihe zu feiern.
