Wolfgang Voigt / Various Artists - Earquake 1995 (Profan 45)

When times are bad, it's always worth taking a look back into the past, back to a carefree place, a romantically charged topos surrounded by light and color. Not only for Generation X the nineties are always such a vanishing point. Not that this decade didn't begin as well with a warlike conflict of global significance, but that's how it is with memory: it gilds one thing and forgets the rest.

Almost a year has passed since "Earquake 1994", the fourth part of the "Best of" Earquake vinyl series by Wolfgang Voigt. With "Earquake 1995" we turn the wheel of time forward another year and dive deep into the first legendary releases of Voigt's Profan Label. Grungerman, Mint, M:I:5, the first GAS inklings. In stark contrast to the ecstatically escalating raving society of the time, tracks like "In Tyrannis", "Tamastar" or "Klang" take us back to a musical period in which Wolfgang Voigt conjured up spirits that would change electronic music forever: Loops, which already anticipated the sonic aesthetic of GAS and the postmodern future of the Ambient genre itself, as well as the stoic rhythmic structures with which Voigt would shape the coming decade of Minimal House and Techno like no other.

In looking back things arise / In looking forward happiness arises / To highest heights where we dizzy / To deepest depths and back.
