5 To 8 EP Rolando
We don't need to tell you that Rolando is a figure synonymous with the roots of Techno. Regularly DJing in Berghain, his unique brand of techno and heavy electronic funk has continued to evolve naturally into the sound you'll here today. On Rolando's first 12'' for the label, we find two diverse tracks each shedding light on the different poles of his current sonic focus. Ben Klock featured both „De Cago“ and „Junie“ on his „Berghain 04“ mix, and now we can enjoy the full tracks in their own right. The proud heritage of „De Cago“ is clear from the outset, yet Rolando works crisp modern drums and edgy acidic synths into the mix, resulting in a potent concoction of jacking, edgy Technofunk. Unapologetically raw and gritty - and all the better for it - is „Junie“. Introducing a different production methodology, this multi-layered half-tempo exploration into eerie harmonics and slow building passages is the latest incarnation of Rolando's emotional and instinctive melody writing.
Man braucht wohl niemanden mehr darauf hinweisen, dass Rolandos Name synonym für die Wurzeln von Techno steht. Als oft und gern gesehener Gast-DJ im Berghain hat er seine einzigartige Sicht auf Techno und schweren, elektronischen Funk fortwährend zu dem weiterentwickelt, was wir heute von ihm hören können. Auf Rolandos Debüt für Ostgut Ton finden sich zwei sehr unterschiedliche Tracks, die Licht auf die klanglichen Pole werfen, zwischen den er sich momentan bewegt. Nachdme Ben Klock De Cago“ und „Junie“ bereits auf seinem „Berghain 04“-Mix verwendet hat, sind die beiden Stücke hier nun erstmals in voller Länge zu hören. Das stolze Erbe, das „De Cago“ mit sich bringt, hört man dem Track ab der ersten Sekunde an, wobei es Rolando gleichzeitig gelingt, knackig-moderne Drums und kantige Acid-Synths zu einem potenten, jackenenden Stück Technofunk zu vermengen. Noch rauer kommt dann „Junie“ zur Sache und das ist auch gut so. Rolando zäumt seine Produktion hier anders auf und türmt etliche Schichten zu einer Erkundung unheimlicher Harmonien und sich langsam entfaltenden Passagen bei halbem Tempo auf und verkörpert somit eine weitere Facette seines emotionalen Umgangs mit Melodien.
