Kompakt Digital Edition 1 Sascha Funke
It didn’t come as a surprise that Sascha Funke had to choose the number 11 in our series of exclusive artist spotlights. The symbolic number on the back, which has a special meaning in Sascha's beloved soccer sport, fits perfectly to the artist, DJ and producer Sascha Funke. In contrast to the brawny type of center forward, who would traditionally wear the number 9, or the free-spirited libero, a sadly extinct tactical invention of the late sixties to early seventies, who was always recognizable by the number 5, the 11 is characterized above all by a quality that in modern parlance is often called "polyvalent". In other words, the "eleven" can actually do everything: dribble, shoot, cross, pass, left and right, even help out at the back, but above all, he likes to attack and score goals.
There was actually a time when Sascha was on the team with Tobias Thomas, Reinhard Voigt, Jürgen Paape and, believe it or not, DJ Dixon, on the soccer field during the day and side by side behind the turntables in the club in the evening. Those were nice and special times, but that story shall be told another time. With this artist spotlight KOMPAKT honors not only a polyvalent, free-spirited and versatile musician and DJ in every respect, but also a guy who, you could say, was there from the beginning and who can be found twice among the first twenty releases of the KOMPAKT label with "Campus" (KOM 013) and "Safety First" (KOM 019). During this time at the end of the nineties Funke, a native of East Berlin, was one of the closest friends, companions and collaborators of the Cologne gang of guys around Michael Mayer, Superpitcher, Reinhard Voigt and Tobias Thomas. So it's even nicer that this special bond has endured after almost 25 years and through many trials and tribulations, resulting not only in the Spotlight but also in the current release of a brand new EP (KOM 449).
Besides two more 12inches, "Drei Auf Drei" (KOM 029) and "Zug Um Zug" (KOM 316) this spotlight also includes the legendary album "Unknown", the two maxis "Golden Prints" and "Grand Cru Remixe" (incl. live version and the “Pachanga Boys Glam Drive Remix”) as well as the Dixon remix of the single "Unknown" by Saschienne, the great and unfortunately somewhat forgotten joint project of Sascha Funke and Julienne Dessagne aka Fantastic Twins.

Logisch, dass sich Sascha Funke die Nummer 11 in unserer Serie von exklusiven Artist-Spotlights aussuchen musste. Die symbolträchtigen Rückennummer, der im von Sascha über alles geliebten Fußballsport eine besondere Bedeutung zukommt, passt nämlich ganz hervorragend zum Künstler, DJ und Produzenten Sascha Funke. Im Gegensatz zum bulligen Typ Mittelstürmer, der traditionell die Nummer 9 tragen würde, oder dem freigeistigen Libero, einer leider ausgestorbenen taktischen Erfindung der späten Sechziger bis frühen Siebziger Jahren, der stets an der Nummer 5 zu erkennen war, zeichnet die 11 vor allem eine Eigenschaft aus, die man im modernen Sprachgebrauch gerne “polyvalent” nennt. Sprich: Der “Elfer” kann eigentlich alles, dribbeln, schießen, flanken, passen, links wie rechts, auch mal hinten aushelfen, aber vor allem sehr gerne vorne, stürmen, angreifen, Tore machen.
Es gab ja tatsächlich mal eine Zeit, da stand Sascha gemeinsam im Team mit Tobias Thomas, Reinhard Voigt, Jürgen Paape und, ob ihr es glaubt oder nicht, DJ Dixon, tagsüber auf dem Fussballplatz und abends Seite an Seite im Club hinter den Plattenspielern. Das waren schöne und besondere Zeiten, aber diese Geschichte soll ein anderes Mal erzählt werden.
