AJourneyOfMilez is at the heart of the current Afro house sound having played all across his native Both Africa and Europe. Inspired by greats like Flea Kuti and Hugh Masekela, he has formed his own signature melodic style and landed on bales like King Street Sound, Nite Grooves and many more, always with richly atmospheric tracks of the sort he serves up once more here.
The EP opens with 'Kwa Dumizulu' alongside Born Kxng, a rousing rhythm with spine-tinging vocals adding warmth and soul before 'Kwa Dumizulu' rides on heavy kicks and comes alive with distant vocal cries and bird class that all add to the rising sense of theatre. The majestic 'Mujo' is a journey across an African savannah at sundown that is marbled with the sound of crickets, birds and life-affirming synth lines. 'Umboko' is another cinematic sound with taught, bouncing kicks setting the groove while wooden hits and live drum sounds add extra layers next to the pulsating chords and ominous vocals.
Busi Mhlongo was an influential singer, dancer and composer from South Africa who delivered poignant lyrics over music that combined local styles such as Mbaqanga, Maskanda, Marabi and traditional Zulu with jazz, funk, gospel, Rap and more. She performed worldwide before her death in 2010 and here AJourneyOfMilez remixes her track 'Aukho Umuz'. It becomes an epic nine-minute adventure with indigenous percussion, tribal vocals that awaken the soul and suspensory chords that keep you truly entranced. Lastly, AJourneyOfMilez's solo cut 'ikhwela' closes down with more organic and expressive Afro house grooves and a dramatic atmosphere.
