Almost exactly two years after „Doppelleben“ („double life“) which highly triggered the still raging neodisco/balearic craze, Justus Köhncke delivers his third album for Kompakt. With „SAFEANDSOUND“ Justus carries out the disjunction of his two lives. From now on we‘ll have to adress the electronic discoteer Justus Köhncke and the troubadour/songwriter Kinky Justice separately. While Kinky Justice‘s debut „Music and Lyrics“ is about to be released on the re-activated iCi Records label, Köhncke is focusing his work on the instrumental, floor-friendly side of things. The 10 tracks on „SAFEANDSOUND“ were created within the past 24 months, mostly while touring the planet both as a live act and DJ. The increased dancefloor impact is very perceptible. Already the album opener „Yacht“ is tearing the door to Justus‘ trademark disco universe wide open with its brilliant „Slave To The Rhythm“- quotations. Three more pure disco bangers are to follow with „Molybdän“, „Love and Dancing (Update)“ and the ecstatic „Parage“. What‘s new is a certain technoid rigour, a vehemency that is new to Justus Köhncke‘s œuvre. Especially the darkroom-ish „$26“ marks a departure from the Köhncke we know. Close your eyes and imagine Cobblestone Jazz could be played by one guy alone. But whereever Justus goes, his music never loses that soulfulness and human temperature (37° to feverish) to it. Even if the environment is sort of dodgy. „SAFEANDSOUND“ was mainly recorded in his new studio, a souterrain basement below the city centre atelier of famous artist and close Köhncke friend Cosima von Bonin. These premises were formerly occupied by a butcher who used Justus‘ white- tiled studio room for his bloody daywork. Later on it was taken over by a strange woman who designed extravagant leather dresses in the first floor while using downstairs as a „studio“ for personal special treatments as well. Arguably that wasn‘t too much about music, though. Apart from the disco crackers and floorshakers we‘d like to recommend you to check out „(It‘s Gonna Be) Alright“, on which Kinky Justice managed to sneak behind the microphone in order to provide the growing deep house movement and his obsession with Kopenhagen pop enigmas „Laid Back“ as well with a tiny but shimmering pearl of a track. Furthermore „Tilda“, „Spukhafte Fernwirkung“ and the title track confront the overall euphoric album vibe with that special enigmatic melancholy you may find in many Kompakt releases and prepare the grounds for the album‘s undisputed highlight.

Justus is beaming Rother‘s machine-like but „played“, Conny Plank-produced sound right in the middle of contemporary dancefloors. Feels like a vitamin injection and serves as a promise that something‘s going to happen soon... something big, something new!

Ziemlich genau zwei Jahre nachdem Justus Köhncke mit „Doppelleben“ massgeblich den noch andauernden Neodisco-/Balearic-Wahn mitinitiiert hat, liefert er sein nunmehr drittes Album für KOMPAKT ab. Mit „SAFEANDSOUND“ vollzieht Justus nun die Trennung seiner beider Leben: das des elektronischen Discoteers Justus Köhncke einerseits und des Troubadours/Songwriters Kinky Justice auf der anderen Seite. Kinky‘s Debut, die 10“ „Music and Lyrics“, erscheint dieser Tage auf dem reaktivierten Kölner Label iCi Records, das er mit Bonin betreibt, während Justus auf KOMPAKT das Hauptaugenmerk eben auf Instrumentalmusik für die Tanzfläche richtet. Die 10 Tracks auf „SAFEANDSOUND“ entstanden binnen der vergangenen 24 Monate, in denen vor allem ausgiebig die Welt betingelt wurde, sowohl live als auch als DJ. Die Auswirkungen auf das Album in Sachen „Clubbigkeit“ sind deutlich zu spüren. Schon der Opener „Yacht“ reisst die Tür zu Justus‘ zitatschwangerem Trademark-Discouniversum weit auf. Neu hinzugekommen ist eine gewisse technoide Vehemenz, die vor allem im darkroomhaften „$26“ durchschlägt. Beseelt und menschlich, warmblütig, (37°C bis fiebrig) bleibt der neue Köhncke-Sound aber unbedingt. Und das, obwohl „SAFEANDSOUND“ in einem neuen Studio entstand, welches sich im Souterrain des Innenstadtateliers der Künstlerin und engen Köhncke-Freundin Cosima von Bonin befindet. Zuvor wurden die Räumlichkeiten von einer Metzgerei genutzt, der abwaschbar gekachelte Kellerraum diente wohl der Tiertötung bzw. deren Zerkleinerung. Danach hielt eine Designerin extravaganter Ledermoden Einzug, die oben im Atelier schneiderte und den Keller ebenfalls als „Studio“ nutzte. Mit Musik hatte das zwar nichts zu tun, aber nach der Pfeife getanzt wurde dort sicherlich auch nicht zu knapp. Mit „Molybdän“, „Love And Dancing (Update)“, dem bereits erwähnten „Yacht“ und „Parage“ sind auf „SAFEANDSOUND“ vier besenreine Discokracher an Bord. In „(It‘s Gonna Be) Alright“ drängt sich Kinky dann doch noch kurz ans Mikrophon, um dem neu erstarkenden Deephouse-Movement ein zartes Kleinod zu schenken. „Tilda“, „Spukhafte Fernwirkung“ und der Titeltrack stellen der vorherrschenden Euphorie Justus‘ ganz eigene enigmatische Melancholie entgegen und bereiten sozusagen den Höhepunkt des Albums vor: Die grandiose, just als Maxi ausgekoppelte Coverversion
