Lioncub (aka D'jeronimo) has risen through Seattle's fervid, populous electronic-music scene, reaching a lofty status as one of the region's most important musical gures via a carefully considered, multi-pronged plan of action. Beginning as a scrupulous techno/house DJ in the mid '00s, he has gone on to promote weekly nights at various venues that championed innovative electronic music while also broadening his sonic palette as a selector. Head of the ambitious Nuearth Kitchen label and Made Like a Tree blog, Lioncub displays a keen ear for distinctive sound worlds that elude pat categorization. He favors the brainy and sensual in music and sounds executed in a rare ed manner. Passion is as important as intelligence in Lioncub's aesthetic and, although he's relatively young, he's made signi cant strides toward achieving a singular vision on several fronts. Following the remix trilogy that he did for Jon McMillion's rst release on Nuearth Kitchen (NEK02), Lioncub o ers his freshman EP with a couple of his own original cerebral soundscape sketches as NEK03. Using a cache of only eld recordings and meticulous instrument programming, this EP is sparse in its delivery but elaborate and colorful in his layering. Reminiscent of the earlier releases by gures such as Bruno Pronsanto, Luciano, and Ricardo Villalobos, there is a very distinctive hypnotic, minimal, and psychedelic quality in these Sketches. On top of Lioncub's four original tracks come two playful dance renditions from the Jon McMillion power house.
