The legendary Thomas Fehlmann
We continue our series of artist spotlights this Wednesday with the venerable Thomas Fehlmann. His contributions to electronic, but also early pop music from Germany are well known and do not need to be listed again at this point. The man is officially a legend and we are mighty proud that Thomas has released so much great music on Kompakt over the past two decades.
In December 2001 Thomas Fehlmann's first EP "Whistle" was released on Kompakt and the first track "Making It Whistle" set the tone for the years to come: Reduced and filigree, chilled technoid House music, full of liveliness and with such an elegance and effortlessness in the best sense of the word, so that the whole being had to appear as a an infinite lightness.
Even if Thomas, picks up the Schaffel rhythm (which he often does) or gives his beats a little more hardness and emphasis, it always remains floating, as if there were always at least two feet of "Gute Luft" (good air) between this charming gentleman in his flawless suits and the earthly existence. Fehlmann actually introduced the aerosol to music long before the small particle became a negative synonym for invisible dangers. But the space that Thomas creates in his music does not remain empty. Charged with history, quotes and small narratives, it radiates one thing above all else: social warmth.

Wir setzen unsere kleine Reihe von Artist-Spotlights diesen Mittwoch mit dem ehrwürdigen Thomas Fehlmann fort. Seine Verdienste um die elektronische, aber auch die frühe Pop Musik aus Deutschland sind hinlänglich bekannt und müssen an dieser Stelle nicht noch einmal aufgezählt werden. Der Mann gilt offiziell als Legende und wir sind mächtig stolz darauf, dass Thomas so viele großartige Musik in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten auf Kompakt veröffentlicht hat.
Im Dezember 2001 erschien Thomas Fehlmann’s erste EP "Whistle" bei Kompakt und schon der erste Track "Making It Whistle" setzte den Ton für das, was noch kommen sollte: Reduzierte und filigrane, ambiente, technoide House Musik, voller Lebendigkeit und mit einer solchen Eleganz und im besten Sinne Mühelosigkeit gespielt, dass einem das ganze Sein als eine einzige, unendliche Leichtigkeit vorkommen musste.
Selbst wenn Thomas, was er sehr gerne tut, zum Schaffel-Rhythmus greift oder seinen Beats ein wenig mehr Härte und Nachdruck verleiht, es bleibt immer dieses Schweben, als seien da immer mindestens zwei Fuß "Gute Luft" zwischen diesem charmanten Gentleman in seinen makellosen Anzügen und dem irdischen Dasein. Fehlmann hat das Aerosol in die Musik eingeführt, lange bevor das kleine Partikel zum negativen Synonym für unsichtbare Gefahren wurde. Der Raum, den Thomas in seiner Musik dadurch erschafft, bleibt dennoch nicht leer. Aufgeladen mit Geschichte, Zitaten und kleinen Narrativen strahlt sie in ihrer Summe vor allem eines aus: soziale Wärme.
